How to develop a relationship with Jesus through the word

Jesus came to give us life and life abundant! (John 10:10). What a wonderful act of God when He breaks into our lives and reveals His love through the Person of Jesus Christ. Jesus paid the price for our sin with His perfect life. His blood poured out as a once for all sacrifice for mankind, so that we can have a relationship with God, that begins the very moment we come to Him and acknowledge what Jesus has done for us. Father God has not only poured out the Holy Spirit to be with us to lead and guide us in our lives, but has also through His inspiration given us the Bible, His word. Psalm 19 reminds us that the word is trustworthy, gives wisdom and joy, insight and clarity. 2 Timothy 3:16 declares the word is the inspired work of God and will lead and guide us in His ways.

What a gift! Through the word we find the heart of God, can come to understand the purpose of God for our lives and discover how to follow Him. When Jesus chose His 12 disciples, He first called them to Him, to be with Him, before He sent them out from Him to live for Him. Jesus spent time with them, sharing in their lives, walking and talking, teaching and expressing His love for people in amazing ways.

Today, His word is available for us in so many ways, Bibles, tapes, cd’s, teaching. His words are life. They bring fresh hope and encouragement everyday. Like the ‘manna’ in the wilderness, His word needs to be freshly received. One way to satisfy a hunger to know Him is to feed from one of the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. He is the One who reaches out to draw us to Himself.

We can’t eat for others! Psalm 34:8 gives encouragement “taste and see the Lord is good”!

When we come prayerfully to His word, He will meet us right there. As we cry out to Him – “I am hungry, feed me!” He answers. Psalm 119:18 gives us the words “Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.”

As we reflect and meditate on His word, we become more sensitive to His voice and may find it helpful to underline the scripture, writing it down, journaling, memorising and praying it in! The key is to come to Him daily, snatching moments, and hours, when we can! And as we respond to Him, our relationship goes deeper.

We find that as we ask questions, looking for promises, seeking for wisdom and understanding and being open to correction, for training in God’s ways, His word will wash, renew and inspire us to press on.

We have Old and New Testaments, and we can meet with Jesus on every page of the Bible. Let us pray, expecting to meet with Jesus, the lover of our soul. We can expect to have an encounter with Him, and trust that His word, which is living and active, will be at work in our lives bringing revelation and transformation.

We find Him in the rich treasure chest of the Word. “If you search for Him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.” (Deut 4:29)
