Love and Be Loved

Love it or hate it……Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Striped_valentineShops are filled with all manner of love Striped_valentine
themed cards and gifts. Red, pink, fluffy, feathery, heart shaped, cute, cuddly, not to mention the risqué and downright embarrassing! Valentine’s Day is big business across the world. A recent survey revealed a few interesting facts about February 14th.  For instance…did you know that over a billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent worldwide. Or that 50 million roses are sent worldwide on Valentine’s Day. Also, more than 36 million heart shaped boxes of chocolates will be sold around the world! And then there’s my favourite fact….that the Italian City of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine’s Day!

Strong Emotions

Valentine’s Day provokes strong emotions in many people. Some love the anticipation; wondering what romantic gesture their husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend will be planning. Others may be dreading it…just another reminder of being single when perhaps they long to be in a relationship.. Some people, however, are simply indifferent to it, choosing for whatever reason, good or bad, to let the day pass by unmarked. Valentine’s Day can be a day filled with joy, love and appreciation for some, or it can be a day filled with disappointment, loneliness and heartache for others. The same survey also revealed that, in the US, 15% of women will send flowers to themselves on Valentine’s Day.

God loves you!

Whether you are eagerly anticipating it, secretly dreading it, or simply not bothered by it, this Valentine’s Day remember that there is someone who loves you far more than anyone else you will ever meet! God Himself, the Creator of the universe loves you passionately and intimately. His love for you goes far beyond anything you have known or could ever know. He loves you so much that He was willing to sacrifice His own Son, Jesus, on a cross, so that you and I could be forgiven, set free and made whole again.
The Bible says that God is
“close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
This Valentine’s Day, why not take time out to read or listen to the Fathers Love Letter…an intimate message from God to you.

Alternatively you may want to pass it on to a friend or someone you know who might be lonely or not looking forward to Valentine’s Day. I heard of a church who wrote Valentine’s cards for each resident of a nearby old peoples home and delivered them with flowers & chocolates. The residents were greatly touched by the gesture and it really made a difference to them – to know that there was someone who cared enough about them to write a personal message in a Valentine’s card. Let’s make this February 14th a day when God’s incredible message of love and hope is shared with as many people as we can, in as many creative ways as we can.
This Valentine’s Day, and every day, may you love and be loved!
