Promise of Summer

Summer holidays always begin with a hope of rest, we long to escape from routine, have a Summertime-Fun-with-Sand-Clay-Art-01break from work, a chance to spent much needed time with family and catch up with friends.  Not only do we look forward to those long summer days, but freedom  from all the endless jobs that have to be done, the hope of a  break from planning menus in favour of BBQ’s and fish & chips on the beach.

I find as the holiday unfolds that it never quite works out with the hope I started off with.  We planned a camping holiday, I found myself surrounded by lists of all the things we needed to take, once packed up and ready to go, we had the car journey to cope with, (to give you some idea we have teenagers) say no more? I could feel the stress building!! And exhausted.

Once we arrived and got the tent sorted out, I settled down to enjoy the lovely sunshine, and tick things off my “hope for summer lists” at last.

This morning I got up early, sitting outside my tent I could smell the waft of bacon across the campsite, and enjoyed the quiet hum of people around me starting their day. It’s funny how we soon get into the rhythm of camping and accept a basic rustic lifestyle, including rain.

I loved having the opportunity to stop, sit in a field and take in the surroundings, it’s in these moments that you can see beyond the difficulties and look to God, to stop and hear what He is saying.

As I was going on long walks through fields and along the coast with my family, it felt like the promise from Psalm 23 v 2-3 He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me besides quiet waters, and He restores my soul.

I realised that I don’t have to leave it to the holidays, that with a bit of effort I could pencil in more of these moments throughout the year. To go for a walk look around and take in the surroundings, look beyond the difficulties. To just sit and wait on God, to restore my soul.
