Out with the old

How did you celebrate New Year?

A girl throwing away

My family live in a part of Italy where it is celebrated in style. Huge firework displays light up the Neapolitan coastline as thunderous bangs reverberate around the mountains. It’s a spectacle; once seen, never forgotten.

And, on the stroke of midnight, another slightly more unusual tradition is played out in these parts. Across cities, towns and villages unwanted objects are thrown out of doors and windows. Often from a great height too. An array of pots, pans and crockery are tossed over balconies onto the cobbled streets below. Fine, if you are the one doing the throwing, not so fine if you are out for a midnight stroll! Hard hats should probably be worn, if ever you happen to be visiting at this time.

It’s a tradition, of course. Rather a quaint one (if a little dangerous!) And one that symbolises getting rid of the old in favour of the new.  What I like most about it is the forceful way the old is ejected! There is nothing gentle about this particular custom. The ‘rubbish’, the ‘old’ is literally hurled outside. Put out. Thrown out. Never to return.

I love how it reminds me of what the Bible says about us as Christians….

If anyone is in Christ she is a new creation. The old has gone the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5 v 17

When we truly love and accept Jesus as our friend then it’s like he has a big clear out in our hearts. The old stuff gets thrown out to make way for the new. The attitudes we held onto that were not helpful, the hurts we nursed that needed to be let go of; the self-centred ways we would live our lives. All that and more got literally thrown over the balcony, so to speak, when we first acknowledged that Jesus is Lord of our life.

This is nothing short of a miracle.

If you love Jesus and have made Him Lord over your life then this miracle is yours for keeps. God has forgiven you and made you clean. You are a new creation, the old has been thrown out. Gone. You are new. You are whole. You are beautiful. You are wanted. You are loved.

Welcome to a New Year and a new you!
