A new lease of life

Andrew, my generous husband, once gave me a grey cashmere cardigan.

I have loved wearing this cardigan.

It is so warm and soft.

In fact I have loved wearing it so much, it went into holes.

Being lazy I didn’t catch the holes when small but carried on wearing and wearing it until the sleeves looked like a teenager’s jeans. I scrunched up the sleeves to hide the holes and kept on wearing the cardigan.

The armpit holes got big too – those, I couldn’t hide.

Andrew bought me a substitute – but it just wasn’t the same.

Then in January , we were passing through Chester. It was mentioned that the Women’s Hour Craft Competition prize entrants were on exhibition there, so we went in to have a look.

I was struck by two heavily darned pieces of knitwear. These garments had been so cherished, the owners had not wanted to part with them so had darned them to within an inch of their lives. One even in a contrasting colour!joy 1

Inspired, I decided I would give my cardigan a new lease of life. I toured the wool shops of Nottingham online until I found an amazing back street place that sold me just the right yarn. Not a match, but who cares?  I then proceeded to darn, crochet, embroider, and even knit into the biggest holes.

The result is not a work of art, but has a character all of its own. An ongoing project I can add to for years. I might even add a contrasting colour. Mustard perhaps?

Nothing is past repair with a bit of imagination and times spent.joy 2

And in our lives, if God is the crafter, nothing is beyond redemption.

In fact He doesn’t just patch up – He makes all things new.

He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.

And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” Rev. 21:4-5
