In safe hands

Imagine, if you will, standing at the supermarket checkout with a long queue ahead of you, so you decide to take that moment to check your phone. Ping! There on the screen is a text from your 22 year old daughter saying, “Hey Mum, they’ve offered me the job!”  Now in normal circumstances this would be cause for celebration but at that moment in time I was having to do everything within my  willpower to not burst into tears, I kept telling myself “please don’t cry, please don’t cry, at least wait until you get back to the car before you cry….” I made it half way across the car park before erupting into tears, and then promptly cried all the way home!

Why such an emotional reaction? The job she had been offered was in… Iraq!

Well, that was 3 months ago and as I type this my daughter is celebrating her 23rd birthday in Mosul, Iraq where she is living and working for a Christian NGO.

God has taken me on an incredible journey since that initial text message in the checkout queue.

I have had moments of complete meltdown – God and my poor husband have had to put up with a lot! Crying out to God: “Why Iraq? There are so many places in the world where she could work, why Iraq?!”

In 1Peter 5:7 we are told to: ‘Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.’

My loving heavenly Father has so graciously and patiently allowed me to vent my fears, my worries, my insecurities to Him and He has then taken each of them from me and replaced in me His incredible peace.

Isaiah 26:3 says: ‘You keep Him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.’

God has filled me with such a calmness and peace as I have clung onto Him and let my daughter travel to such an insecure part of the world, taking God’s love to a people group who have suffered so much hardship and pain, taking His love into a country that many would not dare to enter.

I thought that I would spend this year in a constant state of anxiousness, fear and worry, but as I have made that conscious choice to trust Jesus, to hand all my fears, anxieties and worries over to Him He has replaced them with His incredible peace as He promises to do in Philippians 4:6-7: ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’

I have clung on tightly to the truth that my precious child is even more precious to Him. He holds her so firmly in His hands – A dear friend has lent me this gorgeous garden ornament to remind me of this very truth, it sits outside my kitchen window and is one of the first things I see each morning- a constant, loving reminder from God.sarahs blog

Isaiah 41:10 reminds us: ‘Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.’
